Fireplace Log Splitter |
Foot operated – splitting made easy & safe
Low tech, quiet, and easy to set up and operate. Not for HD splitting, but absolutely terrific for trimming down split logs that are just a bit too large to fit into the fireplace, or for creating lots of small sized kindling quickly.
It's totally portable (keep it in the back hall or on the porch) and lightweight. It'll handle logs up to 18" long and 10" in diameter, but we think it excels in splitting down split sections, so you don't have to fire up the big splitter out back, or get out the maul or wedge. A Canadian invention, and really nice. We want one too. Additional Air Shipping surcharges apply.

| Great Customer Service! |

| I got this for my husband for Christmas. It worked great the first time he used it (although a bit wobbly), but on the second use, the back legs fell off. I called to say we'd be returning it and was told the one we got was a new design. (It was NOT the one shown in the picture with the "Fireplace Friend" logo.) I told Mr. Wolfe, the customer service rep, that we were conflicted about whether to try a second one, for fear it would also break. He said he could send us a different one that he assured me was stronger and better made. That's what we opted for and so far we really like the replacement. Also, re: another review already posted: Garrett Wade pays for return shipping. |

| Absolutely great idea to have something small and human-powered next to the fireplace to break down logs into kindling.
Unfortunately this design could be improved.
The biggest problem is that it does not have enough mechanical advantage. I weigh 170lbs and I had to balance my full weight on the petal and bounce precariously to get it to split many of my hardwood pieces. It does automatically ratchet down after each stroke, so it would be better to have double the leverage at the cost of having to make twice as many (easier) steps.
The rear legs are also only loosely attached with a pin linkage making for a very wobbly base. I needed my wife to stand next to me to have something to hold onto to stabilize myself while standing on the petal. It would be easier and safer if this fit were tighter and the legs were longer.
I can fix these problems with a a half hour of welding, but I shouldn't have to. With a little tweaking of the design this product could be perfect out of the box.
