This clever set-up and measurement jig has multiple uses for DIY craftsmen, home workshops, woodworking, professional machine shops and in construction - some surprising for their subtlety. It fits on the blade of most 6, 12 and 18 combination squares.

In woodworking it sets table saw and circular saw blade heights and cutter heights for dadoes, routers and planers. Plus drill press depth settings are a cinch, as are rip fence settings and hole depths. And it only takes a small step in imagination to visualize how useful this kind of precision adjustment will be on other mechanical work. It's a very versatile jig.

  • Good But...

Dick, 2/21/2015 The Hi-Gage Square attachment fits on my combo square nicely as advertised and slides and locks easily, but the metal strap that extends from the device to set my blade or bit height is the best. After tightening the set screw for the metal strap, the strap does not seat flush with the attachment, and if I'm not particularly careful in setting my blade or rotor bit height, it could be off by as much as 1/32d to 1/16 of an inch too high. If I hold the strap in place while raising the blade or bit, I can achieve the exact height I'm wanting. This makes the attachment less than optimal. As an aside, I had no trouble putting the attachment together that others had experienced. And yes, the manufacturer still does not give you any instructions. I believe the problem that others have had was trying to put the spring inside the hole that the rod goes down to lock in the groove of the combination square. You put the spring on the rod, then insert the rod into hole so the spring is on the outside of the attachment and the treads at the top of the rod then are pushed down against the spring to engage the threads inside the hole at the top of the attachment. If you look at where the spring is on your combination square, you will see how this goes together. I'm still trying to figure out a way to make the metal strap seat properly.

  • Attachment For Tri-Square

Dudley Lowe, 1/29/2015 Had to file slot to fit Starrett blade.... wish the attachment was made from steel instead of aluminum.... otherwise works well.....
  • Instructions Please!

Greg Kimball, 1/2/2015 Looks good for height measurements - don't have a clue about it's other features - how about a simple instruction sheet on uses? I don't want to speak to a technician - one photo or diagram is worth a thousand technicians.
  • Expectations

Robert Phlegar, 12/16/2014 I rate it a 5 based on the joys of expectation." The item is a Christmas gift and I have not yet seen it, but can only hope it to be as I imagine. Shipping costs did painfully raise the total purchase price, but optimism prevails."
  • Good Tool But No Instructions

Wayne, 11/5/2014 Tool functions well as a height gauge but I would have appreciated some instructions - haven't figured out how to use it as a width or depth gauge. If GW or manufacturer is monitoring this feedback, I'd appreciate it if you could send me an email explaining how to use it as a depth and width gauge.

  • Learnick

John, 10/21/2014 Appears to function as advertised but I have not tried yet. No instructions. Came with rod that apparently screws in somewhere but don't know what it's function?
  • Buena Herramienta

Jorge Sanchez, 7/28/2014 Es una excelente escuadra, me servira mucho esta herramienta y de buena calidad.
  • Great Tool

Mike, 7/6/2014 I have been using brass setup bars for a number of years on my table saw and router table relying on feel to get just the right height. When I saw this tool in the Garrett Wade catalog, I thought I would give it a shot. Since I can now visualize the height, it actually works better and more quickly than the bars. I recommend this combo square attachment.
  • Good Tool

Barry, 4/9/2014 Great little addition to my layout tools, only problem it did not come with the knurled knob to attach to the steel ruler.

  • Perfect!

Jeff, 1/22/2014 I don't own high end layout equipment but I have a trusty combo square with protractor head, center finder and now this Hi-Gage. It completes the set without going digital. I need an old fashioned percentage of error in my work and this fills the bill!
  • With a Question

JehNkc, 1/7/2014 Pleased with the gauge but have Question: What is the 2 threaded-end black metal rod (3/16 dia) for??? I see where it goes on the gauge, but FOR WHAT???

Response By: Garrett Wade Tech Department
We have given our technician your contact information and he should be calling you shortly. He will be able to answer these questions, as well as any others, you may have. "
  • Necessary Tool

Rich Laska, 12/21/2013 If you need to measure an ID or planar offset this is the tool for you. It's good enough to do the job well.
  • Just What it Needs to be

ES, 12/18/2013 This is a neat little accessory to my combo squares. Is it Starrett quality? No. It is a little thinner and the finishing is not stellar, but it is just fine for what it is intended for. The price was a little steep, but honestly its a hard-to-find tool so it wasn't out of the ballpark. I like it.
  • Nice Addition To My Starrett

Doug, 11/13/2013 This is a handy addition to any Combo Square. I particularly like the long reach, your square is on your saw table, not your throat plate. Or, your router table, not your insert ring. I would have liked a beefier construction, but I'm spoiled by my Starrett. This is NOT a flimsy cheap thing, by any means.
  • Poor Quality

Will Kraft, 11/5/2013 I could not get it to fit on to a standard combo square out of the box. After investigating why it wouldn't fit I found that a glob of paint or a bit of metal was in the slot. I had to force a piece of sand paper into the slot to remove the obstruction. Once the obstruction was removed and the slot was clean out it fit into place as show in the photo. I expect better quality from GW at the price I paid.
