The great joy of building a model ship derives from the challenge. It tests all your skills - and then some. Patience, curiosity, and problem-solving are all called on, all of which leads you to discover and explore the adventurous past of a historically significant vessel - how it was made, why it was made that way, who sailed it and for what purpose.

The USS Independence was a 10 gun two-masted Schooner (at least one authority says that it was originally built as a sloop) built for the fledgling United States Navy in 1775 and it saw extensive service in the Revolutionary War. Commanded (we believe) by the famous captain Thomas Truxton, it was lost in Ocracoke Creek Inlet in North Carolina in 1778.

There are hundreds of absolutely authentic parts: davits, blocks, sheaves, running gear, standing rigging, brass cannon, cannon balls, brass straps, lanterns, cleats, barrels, ladders, capstans, hawsers, a set of seven sails - and much more. The hull is double planked-on-frame. 29-1/2" long, 23-3/4" high and 13" wide, including all booms and the bowsprit. Scale 1:35.

  • Highly detailed model kit.

Jim Crosby, 6/15/2016 My first Wood ship kit. Not for kids. You will need some skill with simple hand tools and sanding. It is more of a 1:50 scale. It can be a challenge. Not something that can be finished in a couple hours over a weekend. You will learn patience. I recommend this kit to History buffs that would like to try building a C.1776 War Schooner. You will need certain tools, i.e. mini files, plank bender, razor knives, tweezers, clamps, small mallet, chisels, drill bits. Not as easy as a plastic ship, for certain. Well worth the effort. Great kit!
  • Poorly designed parts.

Douglas Lin, 4/17/2016 I bought this for my 10 year old daughter. She usually does not need my help with projects like this but for this ship I spent hours altering the pieces so they can fit together. The manufacturer did an extremely poor job. All the wooden pieces are supposedly precision laser cut and should fit together perfectly. They obviously did not test the slot cuts for tolerance because we had so much trouble fitting the pieces together. The slots fit so tightly that most times you can't slide them into place completely. Most of the pieces of the hull needed to be trimmed with blades until they can slide into place, and even then, if you made a mistake, there is almost no way to separate the pieces. Stay away from this particular brand!!
