Made by a famous, traditional brush making firm that still only uses the best mix of hand and machine manufacturing methods. One of these elements is to use only top quality bristle, securely bonded so only a very few come loose. Among other benefits, these brushes hold more finish because they are solid, thick bristle from tip to handle – with none of the “filler” used by most. They will last for many decades of use if cared for properly.

Proper trimming is one of the most difficult \and expensive steps in making a first quality brush. Mass produced ones are either trimmed straight across or cut in a simple “chisel” shape. Look at our French Flat Brushes in 1” and 2” widths – they are hand trimmed with the traditional (but now very rare) double-curved shape (the tips have a gradual radius in both width and thickness). This ensures a smoother flow of finish, eliminates “ridges” at the edges as you brush and reduces overlapping marks. (A review in WoodenBoat magazine of these tools has said “I’ve tried no end of brushes, from cheap to very expensive …and I’m here to say that there’s no hyperbole in Garrett Wade’s description. Expensive yes, but the toppest of the notch.”)

The Round French Brushes, superb for irregular surfaces (cutting-in corners, mouldings, trim work etc) are available in 5/8 and 3/4” diameters. They are pointed – naturally concentrating the finish in the longest center bristles and giving you superb control.

Applying Oil & Solvent Based Finishes
Solvent based finishes should be applied with a brush using 100% natural bristle. Synthetic bristles are “too slippery.” These have the right stiffness and fluid holding ability for wood finishing. These are 100% natural, cream colored hog bristle and have a brown colored handle. The set of 4 includes one of each.

Applying Water Based Finishes
Good advice says that water based finishes need to be applied with a different kind of brush, because water tends to make a natural bristle swell up. That is correct but it’s rare you can get anything other than a 100% synthetic bristle these days, which has its own drawbacks. The best solution is to use a brush with a blend of synthetic and natural bristle – giving you both superior fluid holding ability and freedom from swelling, but these are now very hard to find. Ours, however, are made this way and have a blended bristle mix (hand trimmed the same way) and have blond colored handles. The set of 4 includes one of each.

Head Came Off
Reviewed By:   (Escondido, CA)
Right out of the box I noticed a large gap between the head's ferrule and the handle. Upon closer examination and a gentle tug I had the brush head in one hand and the handle in the other hand. I've epoxied the two back together. I wasn't expecting a paint brush to be "some assembly required"! I'll try it as a brush after the epoxy cures.

Best Brushes I've Used

Thanks for bringing back these wonderful brushes. I still have a full set of the solvents from years ago and am picking up another set of the water-based, which have no equal anywhere for trim, moldings and edging. Paint-holding capacity and ability to make a fine straight edge are what I love about these.

Glue Brushs
Reviewed By:   (Dixon, CA)
I was looking for something larger than an acid brush for my glue ups that covered wider areas. Store bought brushes of the size I wanted often came apart when exposed to water for any length of time and the new plastic ones came apart when stressed. These seem to be well built and I hope they'll do better.
