The most precision a woodworker can expect is to 1/64th of an inch. To get close to that, marking lines must be incised, not surface daubed. Scratch Awls make incredibly fine marks - and the width of the lines will not vary – to help guide a chisel or saw. End grain and with-the-grain applications are especially well suited for an awl.
Our Rosewood Scratch Awl has a hardened and tempered 5” shank, gently tapered to a sharp point and joined to an hourglass-shaped handle of turned rosewood with a solid brass ferrule. The Awl excels at marking dovetails, mortises and tenons for chisel and saw, and dados for inlay and marquetry, as well.
The Scratch Awl is also available in the Special Chisel Set
