G. Ibberson is an iconic Sheffield knife maker - over 150 years old - and well versed in making naval/marine knives. In fact, we have carried a fine one of theirs (58B01.01) for several years. But recently, their craftsmen began to produce a premium Marlinspike which, although more expensive, we simply couldn't resist - because of its special design and high finish.

The 2" cutting knife is exceptionally sharp and has 16 serrations for aggressive performance. The "shackle fitting" has multiple shackle-key cutouts plus a bottle opener and the 3" curved marlinspike has specially designed, shaped cross-section that will prove especially effective in demanding rope work. The whole tool is beautifully polished, has a 36" long cotton lanyard and comes in a gift presentation box. All-in-all, it's a fine value given the very high quality. You don't need to be a Sailor to appreciate the all around usefulness of this tool.

  • May Be One Of The Best Folding Rigger's Knife Out There

JB, 6/19/2014 This is the best folding rigger's tool out there. I have another Ibberson rigger's knife with a straight blade, I bought about 35 years ago. I use it mostly for splicing, mending, and braiding line. Both models are virtually identical. The serrated blade is good with some of the newer lines, and cutting seat belt and packing straps. The marlinspike is rock solid, one of the best I've seen. I don't do much with shackle screws, so I use the shackle key to help mending and splicing line. Even if one is not a deep water sailor, this tool is a good addition to a first aid or emergency kit. The blades are a little stiff at first. I reversed the lanyard knots to make the fixed diamond a jamming knot for the slip, so it wouldn't strangle me if I got snagged. Ibberson makes several other models as well as fixed blade riggers which are well worth considering.
