Accurate, controlled honing for Woodworking chisels and plane blades Good honing guides come in all shapes and sizes - some cheaper and some very expensive with elaborate jigging. This is a new one of moderate cost that works with one our favorite surfaces - alumina zirconia or waterproof silicon carbide PSA-backed (PSA: Pressure Sensitive Adhesive) sandpaper.

This abrasive material used in various grits on a suitable flat surface (glass, marble, laminated plywood etc.) does an absolutely beautiful job preparing a cutting edge. The 3" wide tough nylon rollers provide great stability (this is very important).

With each jig comes a pack of eight pre-cut sheets sized 2-3/4 x 4-1/2" of PSA-backed sandpaper, 100, 150, 220, 320, 400, 600, 1,000 and 1,500 grit. Replacement packs of the 8 assorted grits as originally supplied are available, although you can substitute your own obtained locally from a hardware or auto parts store. If you cannot get PSA papers, use a spray adhesive instead (instructions are provided).

Two rows of guide pins (one of which can be recessed for blades over 1-1/4" wide) are used to reference locate all blades absolutely square to the roller track. The clamp bar can be repositioned in the forward position to securely hold smaller blades, like spokeshave blades.

New to chisels and newer to sharpning
Reviewed By:  Bryon Mcgowan (Wilmington, Delaware)
New to chisels and newer to sharpening. I saw the Chisel Doctor on Garrett Wade and ordered it from them shipping was very fast. I like the fact that is American made. The honing guide is made very well with 3/16 steel. The clamping system for the tools is good with brass knobs. For chisels and blades under 1 1/4" nothing needs to be changed for over 1 1/4" you have to tap the roll pins flat. This a poor setup I think that a better way could be found possible screws. If you are starting off with poor condition tools you will go through a large amount of the coarser papers. Once you get your 25 deg the 30deg micro bevel is easy to achieve and touch up. Over all I think that the price of $45.00 if is fair the price and replacement sand paper is also fair at $3.50. I would recommend this to a friend.

The Chisel Doctor

While going nuts for a long long time over sharpening chisels, & plane irons, I came across this USA made honing guide from Garrett Wade http://www.garrettwade.com/the-chisel-doctor/p/58A01.01/ It’s a little expensive, but, I don’t think too badly at 45 bux. It is very well made with dual wheels instead of the type that has a single wheel in the middle, 2 brass knurled knobs very nicely counter sunk, and a very nice coating of wrinkle paint. The Chisel Doctor is well worth the purchase. It comes with 8 pieces of assorted PSA sandpaper. 100-1500 grits. I did use a piece of MDF and a 12”x12” granite tile ( 5bux) from the orange box store to attach the sandpaper to. You set your chisel or plane iron 1” from the edge for a 25 degree bevel, and 3/16” for the secondary bevel at 30 degrees. WOW! I am very, happy with this purchase. If you are in the market for a good honing guide, this is it. The one thing I did add to it, was a very small piece of sandpaper on the steel bar that holds the iron or chisel in position. That little bar has a “dado” incorporated in it, I imagine it was to help hold the chisel in place, but, it still wanted to move a bit, so, I added the sandpaper. No big deal. I also dug out my old Stanley #91/2 Block plane that I bought when I was about 14, (think it was my 1st real hand tool). It needed a LOT of help. I’ve got curl comin off that old plane now. Hope this helps anyone looking for a honing guide.
