With the possible exception of George Washington's rowboat, no naval craft in history figures as prominently in the story of an American presidency as motor torpedo boat PT-109 does in the life of her young skipper, Lt. (jg) John F. Kennedy.
Built by the hundreds for the war effort, with three 12-cylinder Packard engines, carrying four 2000 lb. torpedo, and intended as fast, powerful search and destroy craft, PT boats were most often out-matched in battle, pitted against the destroyers and cruisers that protected enemy sea lanes. In the Pacific theater, they relied heavily on stealth, running under cover of darkness (hence, the dark green color) with the engines heavily muffled. In such conditions, PT-109 met her fate on a moonless night in the Solomon Isles—and an American legend was born.
