It's just an object, yet every single time we picked it up, our collective heart beat just a bit faster.
Perhaps it's the fact that this was the plane flown by Charles Lindbergh that accomplished the epic feat of flying solo nonstop from New York to Paris in May 1927. Made completely by hand, all the silvery painted surfaces and controls seem to glow with energy. It's probably a bit of everything - but nonetheless, it is something that's hard to take your eyes off of.
The Spirit of St Louis (28 ft. long with a 46 ft. wingspan) was designed and built by fledgling Ryan Air of San Diego California. The engine was a specially modified 220 hp, 9 cylinder air cooled Wright J-5C. This model (12-1/2" long, wingspan 19-1/2") is a faithful replica of this most famous aircraft.
The original is in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Washington D.C. It's not to be missed if you are there.
