When working crouched in the flower bed, sometimes we unexpectedly have to take a whack at something immediately in front of us. Stabbing with a small hoe or hand trowel may or may not work, but this little 14 long axe will do the trick in a second. It’s light (1 lb., 14" long) and the bearded head design gives it great one-hand balance. Pick it up, whack away and then put it down. Easy and functionally purposeful. It won't come very sharp, but we suspect that it's just right - at least it seemed that way to us when we used it.
About DeWit
DeWit tools are a direct connection to the time when the best tools often came from the village blacksmith. Innovated and evolved from experience and made to last forever, a DeWit-made tool represents the closest possible connection between the tool maker and the tool user to be found in today’s global market. Willem de Wit opened his blacksmith shop in Kornhorn, a small village in northern Holland, in 1898. He did all the things a country village blacksmith did back then – he was a farrier, repaired kettles and sold bicycles. When his sons joined him the business grew, making tools for agriculture. A DeWit tool came to be known to combine good design, skilled craftsmanship and the very best materials, and soon their spades and hoes were in demand all over Holland. The 4th generation of the de Wit family today runs the company by the same principles and standards. Skilled hand forging may be augmented with modern techniques and equipment where appropriate, but the essential connection between the designer/maker and the user endures – only now the de Wits listen to gardeners and farmers from all over the world. And their continued insistence on only the best materials can be readily appreciated in the use of FSC-certified ash handles and Swedish boron steel – the same steel used on a popular brand of bulldozer blades!

  • Small Garden Tool

Bill Sewell, 7/8/2015 Interesting tool. Perhaps designed for the ladies, rather than for a guy. Very small and very lightweight. It would struggle hacking through anything larger than a small root. Found steel to be very soft, but sharpened easily. The handle is a nice shape, but again, probably meant for a ladies hand.
  • Perfect Sidekick

Virginia Fox White, 1/11/2015 I live on a good sized ranch and I'm most always outside working. I'm a petite woman so this axe is perfect to have with me, whether its tucked into my belt or in my tool basket. I'm certain this tool wasn't designed for large jobs. With that being said, its perfect to get small trees out of the way or chopping briars down at the base. I only wish there were a leather sheath so it could be easily carried on my belt. This axe isn't extremely sharp, but for its purpose, its plenty sharp. I did have my farrier use his grinder to sharpen it some because Texas tends to have tough vegetation. Its very easy to sharpen. I've not had any issues with the axe head loosening from the handle. This little guy is my sidekick.

  • Great Design, Loose Head

David, 9/21/2014 The axe head is not properly fitted to the handle, and came loose after a single day of light use. Otherwise the design and craftsmanship is excellent, and the axe would be, too -- if not for this very basic flaw, which a customer simply shouldn't find in a tool of this class. Very disappointing.

Thank you for your review on the Small Garden Axe. We are sorry to hear you had some trouble with the axe. Swelling and shrinking of the wood is usually the reason this happens. We have emailed you a memo which applies to all of our axes with wooden handles, and hope you will find this helpful. If you wish to return it for another, please feel free to send it back using the label which was included. If you are in need of one, we will be happy to send you one. Once again, we apologize for the inconvenience.
