It’s probably fair to say that no aspect of woodworking is more overlaid with mystique than that of finishing. And as a woodworker, you have a huge variety of choices in selecting the protecting “Top Coat” for your project, whether it be Oils, Shellac, Varnish, Lacquer, Gels and so on. However, of all the alternatives, in our experience none exceeds Oil in being forgiving, easy to work with and to repair, and in providing the most ”natural” appearance that enhances the beauty of the wood surface. In addition, wood-finishing Oil can provide a very high degree of absolute surface protection and a high gloss if desired.

Of all the different types of oils, none approach the performance of Tung Oil. It is recognized as the finest oil finish available. However, most so-called Tung Oil finishes on the market have been adulterated with varnishes, lower cost soy oils, and/or polyurethane additives. This makes the finish somewhat cheaper and easier to use, but sacrifices the special qualities of Tung oil. Pure Tung oil provides a tough, hard surface that is absolutely waterproof, and impervious to dust, alcohol, acetone, and fruit and vegetable acids. It does not darken with age as linseed oil does. Sutherland Welles is a small firm but its wood finishing oils have extraordinary proprietaries and performance. It is more expensive to be sure, but the extra cost becomes cheap in the end.

Sutherland Welles uses polymerization from a special cooking process, producing a chemical cross-linking of the molecules, to give its Tung Oil a faster drying time and a harder, higher gloss surface. Increasing the percentage of polymerized oil in the formulation of the finish restricts penetration but increases luster, durability and hardness. Always wipe off excess oil, turning your rag frequently. If tackiness persists, simply wet the surface with more oil, wipe immediately and let dry overnight. Keep tightly capped and minimize the amount of air in the can (marbles or clean rocks do the trick) to prolong shelf life.

More Info
Sealer: 20% Polymerized Oil is formulated for maximum penetration and fluidity. It effectively closes up the wood pores and sets up a base.

Low Luster: 25% Polymerized Oil is formulated for humid weather and short drying time. Use after the sealer for times when a soft, mellow sheen is desired.

Medium Luster: 35% Polymerized Oil is formulated to produce a harder, more durable final finish more quickly and with a higher luster. This formulation is particularly recommended for surfaces exposed to more wear and tear.

High Luster: 50% Polymerized Oil produces the hardest, most durable finish with maximum sheen and protection. It will set up a bit faster, as well. Ideal for floors, tables and items subject to spills or hard use.

Each successive coat of each of these finishes will produce greater sheen, depth and durability.

Sutherland Welles also makes an exterior Tung oil and a superb, flexible spar varnish especially for marine or exterior use. These have non-toxic UV protection and anti-mildew additives for greater protection from the elements.
