Comprehensive and deeply knowledgeable about its subject, The Furniture Bible is dense with the tips, insights, historical perspective and incredible technique that’s been gleaned from an extraordinary life’s work in the restoration and care of fine furniture. Christophe Pourny was raised in his father’s studio in the south of France and apprenticed in his uncle’s legendary antiques shop in Paris. Immigrating to the United States to establish his own career, he’s become one of America’s preeminent antique restoration experts.

Beautifully illustrated and photographed, Pourny’s is an extremely well organized book about craft that’s written with a very high degree of craftsmanship. Every subject is explained and demonstrated using the resources of his thriving commercial studio. The overview of historical furniture styles springs to life with photographs of an actual restoration of a Victorian horsehair upholstered chair (it's like watching surgery while the doctor discusses the history of medicine).

Pourny knows almost everything about the world of antique furniture and he touches on most of it – from spotting gems and duds at an auction to fixing a splintered drawer using historically correct materials. The heart of the book is the large section on the techniques used in his trade. Pourny knows we want to learn how to do what he does. He holds the secrets of a dying art. He seems to be on a mission to pass them on. We are grateful. Highly recommended for your library or workshop shelf.

Michael Young, 3/15/2015 My craft is the restoration of furniture, specifically the carvings or applied decorations on them. I purchased this text for my library. It is well written, organized in logical sections, and the information is accurate. The beginner would not be frustrated, nor would the professional be bored. I have found that the text is an excellent reference to share with customers while discussing what is needed to restore their pieces. Already, I have had one client cheerfully agree to with the author and myself as to what was needed and at what cost to repair a fire damaged sea chest. This is a high quality reference (both the contents and and the actual book binding etc.) which has paid for itself already in customer good will.
