  • Tap and Die Wood Threading set, 1 inch

Susan, 9/20/2020 Wonderful product for custom made items. This gives custom products an extra flair and special appearance.
  • extra cutters

J Love, 9/6/2020 I purchased a couple different sized thread sets but wanted some extra cutters just in case! The original cutters in the thread boxes are still very sharp, but when they need sharpening I can swap them out for a new cutter and keep working and sharpen the other cutter when I have time. All the cutters in the thread boxes and extra cutters came with a very sharp edge.
  • wooden threads

    J. Love, 9/6/2020 I've been wanting to make wooden vise screws and screws for other woodworking projects but had heard a lot of conflicting info on threadbox quality. I tried a test on a scrap piece of dowel after first making a sample thread with the tap. the result was very close, with a couple slight adjustments of the cutter the results were right on. I used a mix of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits to lubricate the wood. The quality of the thread box and tap set are very good.
  • Heck Yeah!

B Locknane, 8/30/2020 I’d read a lot about making wooden screws in my research to find a technique that is both easy and relatively inexpensive. I learned the best types of wood as well as how to soak the dowels in oil before cutting the threads. I thought I knew how to do it.
So after receiving the 1 1/4” tap and die set from Garrett Wade, I set two 1 1/4” pieces of dowel from HD to soak in Boiled Linseed Oil. THIS WAS A MISTAKE! Boiled Linseed oil is sealant and finish product. It has chemicals included to speed drying time. Raw Linseed Oil is actually the type of oil to use if Linseed Oil is what you decide to use. Mineral Oil has been suggested most often.

All that said, I pulled the first dowel, poplar, and started cutting. One minute later I had a perfect screw rod.
After that I tried the oak dowel. First issue was that the dowel was SLIGHTLY TOO BIG and I had to put it on the lathe to shave it down. The spinning lathe exasperated the Boiled Linseed Oil mistake and the dowel was pretty dry by the time it was ready. But guess what? It turned out great. A little bit of VERY small chip out in a few places, but given the errors I made I’m sayin’ heck yeah!
Finally, great product but also great service and fairly quick delivery. Thanks Garrett Wade.
  • Tap and Die

max Kaiser , 7/16/2020 nice set good quality but no instructions whatsoever don't know if they were forgotten or only online they're still a lot of us who don't have a computer and don't want to download a pdf on our phone
  • Wood tap & dye set

James Warburton, 7/2/2020 Works great! I soak the wood in mineral oil for a week first...perfect results every time.
  • Good Tool!

Walt, 6/13/2020 Works great - just be sure to soak your wood in boiled linseed oil for 2 to seven days depending on the thickness of the dowel. Use a tight grain hardwood and you will get perfect results
  • Additions to the tool instructions

Dale, 4/30/2020 The instructions suggest using a lubricant like linseed oil. But after two failures with another lubricant and doing continuous turning of the dowel threading tool, an online video gave me a much clearer picture of how to do it. This video recommended soaking the dowel in mineral oil for 2-7 days, depending on the diameter (7 days for a 2.5 " dowel). Also, it was essential to make about 1/5 turn on the dowel and then reverse the same distance to clear the chips out. Then go 1/5 turn further clockwise, and reverse again. For the hole or wooden nut, I drilled nearly through and then filled the hole with mineral oil and let it soak into the wood. The threads then were perfect.
  • Tap and Die Wood Threading Set

David Plummer, 4/28/2020 Well built and easy to use.
  • Good, especially the ability to get extra die cutters

Jim, 4/26/2020 All of these dies use the same size cutter, a good thing because this one broke almost immediately. I had a spare & it works great. They'll send another without argument, but it will take 7-10 days. Still, they're one of the few places to even sell a spare die cutter AND this comes with 2 taps, one through & one for stopped holes. To make bolts, I find soaking the blanks in thinned poly or linseed oil (plastic bag inside a paper towel tube) for an hour & letting dry that long works best. Turn bolts a hair small. (Nothing worse than getting part way & finding the die won't go further.) If tapping end grain, soak & let dry over night. No need if cutting across the grain of a diffusely porous hard wood like maple or fruit wood. I don't like trying to use porous woods. Avoid knots! They usually won't take threads & can break the die cutter. If you turn the bolt blanks as I do, leave the square end on until the die can't go further, back off a bit, cut off square end, & then finish cutting the threads. Having the square end to put in the vice to start is great.
  • Solid and very sharp!

Joe Seals, 4/25/2020 Perfect results the first time I used it!! No adjustments needed. Would recommend to anyone!
  • Tap, Tap, Tap!

Richard Holloway, 4/3/2020 Wonderful Tool! THIS is Why You are Essential Company!
  • tap and die 1"

    Joel, 11/23/2019 works great
  • Tap &die set

Barbara, 6/11/2019 Bought for my husband & he loves it
  • Beautiful and functional

Abbie McMillen, 5/2/2019 This is a beautiful tool. I'm fussy about tools being aesthetically appealing as well as functional, and this little item nicely qualifies. My work tends to be fussy, jewelry scale items and it was very difficult to find an appropriate size tap and die set for making little turned cases for sewing needles. I hope to try this on acrylic pen blanks as well as the beautiful wood blanks available for pen turners, which make great needle cases.
  • Tap and die set, 1/2 inch

Tom , 4/29/2019 Delivery was very quick and the tap and die worked like a charm first time. I'm very happy
  • I like the tap and die set/

Jimmy W Burke, 3/14/2019 The tap and die works very good as long you oil your wood dowel and let the oil do its job. The die cuts the threads very good.
  • Tap& Die Set 3/4" and 1" 1/2

Antoine Rose, 2/15/2019 Good tap and die set, well made. However, I used the 1"1/2 tap in ash wood and for that size, the turning bar is clearly undersized. Such a big tap in combination with hardwood requires much more lever. For that size of tap, I would also have preferred a larger thread. I will fabricate a larger handle for that tap.
  • 1/2 dowel threader

James P, 2/14/2019 Seems very well made. Very sharp can’t wait to use. Plan on using mineral oil with dowels.
  • Good Tap & Die set

mikesbeehives, 1/11/2019 very nice tool. I have only used it 3 times for threading a dowel, but it seems to work very well. No directions came with it so other than the obvious, there aren't any suggestions. My only hardship is the dowel or wood needs to be soaked in oil for a day or two to make it easier. I learned this trick on a You Tube video.
  • Works well for cutting threads in/on wood

Lowlander70, 12/30/2018 Excellent product, enabled us to repair a very old family dresser. Tried using metal taps and dies but not adequate.
  • 3/4" tap and dye set

William Young, 12/27/2018 This 3/4" tap and dye set exceeded my expectations . Rather than a long description here , this is a video I made on my very first try with it Youtube: Wood Tap and Die Kit 1
At the time of making the video I didn't realise the second tap was a bottoming tap so I included that in my description below my video.
Very pleased with my purchase .
  • Excellent Tap and Die Wood Threading Kit

Maurice Lee Entwistle, 12/10/2018 I'm retired and am just getting into woodworking. A vise is a necessity and I wanted to make my own. I did some youtube searches and saw that traditional vises had wood thread. Threaded wood is not available at the local hardware or lumber outlets, but dowels are. So I researched online for a traditional tap and die set to thread a rod and tap a hole. Most sets only come with one tap, but the set from Garrett Wade had two taps, one to start the hole, and a second to finish it. A two tap kit seemed more complete.

I was also tempted by the fact that Garrett Wade put a lot of research into traditional tools, and is bringing some back that are no longer made. I felt that this was an attitude I wanted to support. Quality seemed to jump out at me from the detail of the pictures and well written descriptions. Stories behind the tools was also informative as well as entertaining.

I had never used a tap and die set before. The only preparation I did was soak the dowels in vegetable oil while waiting for the delivery. This softens the wood so the cutting is smooth and doesn't chip the threads. Within a half hour of receiving the set I had several 1 1/4 " rods threaded and tapped holes to receive them. I made several moxon vises the next day. The set worked flawlessly.
  • Tap and Die Set review

Phillip Freeman, 11/2/2018 An excellent product at a very reasonable price. This is the kind of Tap and Die set I was looking for and was not surprised at the quality. I have bought from Garrett Wade many years ago and just recently have been able to return to woodworking and so glad to know Garrett Wade is still here offering such a variety of products at a most reasonable price.
  • 3/4" Tap and Die Set

Norm, 5/5/2018 It worked as advertised. I threaded a 3/4" poplar dowel and nuts made from white oak for a toy for my grandson.
  • Threader 3/4 inch

Peter Darrach, 9/26/2017 I bought this threader to make thread wooden nuts to make a holder for pegs for cribbage boards I’m making. Could not find one in Canada so I ordered it from Garrett Wade. As a first time buyer I was very impressed the service I received and the contact I had when I phoned the company direct. As for the threader I was very impressed with the quality of the product and the ease of use. I have never used a threader before I’m sure glad I got this one. I would not hesitate to recommend you this product to anyone. I will be ordering again in the near furture saw I few things in the catalog I would like for Christmas thanks Garrett Wade. Great product and company.

  • 1/2" threads

masaru kuno, 8/28/2017 Bought this to make toys for my son. never tapped or threaded wood prior to this, only worked with aluminum and steel. basically, my opinion after having used the item a few times is that the build of the product is good. the die works and cuts threads easily in wood even without oil. my only thought here is that the the threads i've cut in poplar dowels fall apart quite readily. oak and pressure treated lumber were much better experiences. tapping also works well and i had no issues here when working in harder woods. overall i would recommend this product based on my experiences with it. no complaints.
  • Wood Threading Kit 1 1/4 "

Jim Marshall, 6/27/2017 A nice combo set for wood threading, plus the extra tap for bottom threading, Great value and well made.
  • 1 1/4 inch tap and die set for wood.

Carl, 4/23/2017 I was very pleased with the product. I made a Moxon vice for my work bench using SYP 5/4 jamb, very hard, and poplar dowel. There was some chipping on the dowel threads probably because it isn't very hard. The vice works great'
  • tap and die wood threading set

Gerald Capps, 4/22/2017 Quality tool, very happy easy to use and handy.
  • Awesome Tool

Carolyn, 4/17/2017 Just what I wanted. Well made and easy to use. Should be in every woodworkers' tool box!

  • Good value

Robert Timberlake, 2/18/2017 This tap and die set is a real value. It is very easy to use and clear instructions are included. I ordered all the other sizes and I would order from this company again. True value and well constructed.

  • Good value

Robert Timberlake, 2/18/2017 This tap and die set is a real value. It is a high quality product that's well worth the money. I ordered all the sizes and have tested them. Very easy to use and well constructed.
  • Wood tap and die set

Ray Chamberland, 2/3/2017 This tap and die set realy works better than I expected. It is a high quality product that's well worth the money.
  • 3/4 in wood tap and die set

Bill Cochran, 1/30/2017 This is the only tap and die set for wood I have found that included a bottoming die. Other vendors made you buy the bottoming die separately. I used it to make a wooden mallet and it worked just as advertised. Great buy
  • New see you after lots of use!

Dave, 1/20/2017 Like the looks and quality. I'll come back after more use with more thoughts.
  • Gift

Joy, 1/2/2017 I ordered the Tap & Die Wood Threading Set for my husband. He loves it!!
  • Wood tap and die set

Sylvio, 11/29/2016 I ordered the 3/4 set. Very easy to use, I'm thinking to order the other sizes. Exactly what I was looking for!
  • Tool maker

Jeff Campbell , 11/3/2016 I ordered the 1" tap and die set, a nice quality product, use plenty of wax or lube on the die and it will. Cut nice threads, the same with the tap. Put a lead in chamfer on the piece to thread and it will start cutting fairly easy.
  • Great Tool

Ronnie Poole, 10/24/2016 I ordered the 1/2 inch and 1 inch sets. The best I can say is that I WILL be ordering the remaining size sets next month. Easy to use. Clean cutting. Each set also comes with an instruction sheet that is clear and concise yet thorough enough to enable anyone to use the tools confidently.
  • Tap and Die Wood Threading Set

Mike Crane, 10/14/2016 I ordered the 1/2 " set of 3. I have the 1" set that I ordered previously and I have plans of eventually owning the entire set that is made. The quality is more than I expected. They were sharp and ready to work right out of the box. I have not messed up threads yet as I thought I would. I also use wax for lube, as none of my work has anything but boiled linseed applied. The wax works great, with no effort at all. I have made a lot of wooden bar clamps and am well satisfied. You can also order these from Amazon which is where I first found them. I figured I would check with Garrett Wade and found them cheaper from them. The service on both orders was very speedy.Thank you Garrett Wade for a great product! Look for my next order for the rest of the sizes!! Thank you!

  • Wood Dowel Tap and Die

Joseph Smith, 8/4/2016 Great Tool, simple and easy to use. Same company should design a dowel shaver to use with it.
  • I got screwed

Mike Ericksen, 8/2/2016 Delivered promptly; product well-designed and easy to use. Will buy another set.
  • Good tool, expect to sharpen and adjust before use.

Richard, 7/12/2016 Cutting edge dull and useless when received, but once sharpened and properly adjusted worked great. It was what I had expected from reading reviews for all of the thread boxes available for sale. Buy it, but expect to sharpen and adjust the tool. Quick shipping, will buy from you again!
  • Tap and dies

SISVASH ANSARINIA, 7/11/2016 I appreciate the quality, the price ,instruction, packaging and dispatch of tap and dies I ordered. I was wondering why there are not larger sizes available.

Response By: Garrett Wade Tech Department
Thank you for your review on the Tap & Die Wood Threading Set. Your suggestion is appreciated, and has been passed along for future consideration.
  • Good Tool, Weak Instructions

Gary Schulberg, 6/18/2016 Although the tool seems to work adequately, the instructions did not explain how to use the brass cap nut on the die to adjust the blade.

Response By: Garrett Wade Tech Department
Thank you for your review on the Tap & Die Wood Threading Kit. We are sorry to hear that the instructions were not satisfactory. Please give our technician a call at 1-800-221-2942. He will be happy to answer your questions.
  • Follow the directions

WEBPAC , 5/21/2016 Pick your wood species and pick the specific piece carefully, go slowly and you should end up with a real nice looking and nice working nut and bolts! Can't wait to use them more!
  • Excellent Tap and Die set

Angel Rivera, 5/16/2016 The product was delivered quickly. It was described accurately and it works flawlessly. I have made several purchases from Garret Wade and I am very happy with all the products.
  • Very happy customer I will return

Stuart, 3/23/2016 This was my first purchase with Garrett Wade and I was very happy with the speed of delivery and the way it was packaged. The tap and die set looks to be of high quality the 2 metal taps come sealed in a bag and oiled, the whole set is boxed and the instructions are straight forward and easy to understand.
  • Handy tool

Tom, 3/4/2016 Handy device if you follow the instructions and use it properly.
  • Very Happy with the Threader Set

Larry, 3/4/2016 Tools were all that I wanted. I did need to adjust the cutting depth on the die cutter to not thread the downs too deeply. It improved the thread fit and also reduced the breaking of some threads while cutting.
  • works great

randy pierce, 3/4/2016 Very nice, and affordable. I clamp itinto a bench vice, and follow the directions including using linseed oil for lubricant and got very nice results. I use my hand drill on low speed for tapping and also threading with the die. I made wooden bolts from red oak and also from maple. The maple works much better and did not produce any rough threads, but the red oak does produce a few damaged threads, still useable but not as pretty. Use maple if you can, or soak the red oak for days before milling in oil.
  • The Best International Hand Tool Supplier

Guy L-S, 9/8/2015 As always, Garret Wade continues to amaze me. I have purchased various items over the years from you and have only ever been extremely happy with my purchases. The quality of the products is excellent and pricing is very good, even in South African Rands. I am currently setting up a period cabinetmakers workshop at the Drotsdy Museum here in Swellendam ZA and GW offered the best prices that I could find worldwide on the specific Imperial size screw boxes and taps that we needed. Thank you again for the excellent service and prompt delivery. for specialist traditional woodworking tools, Garrett Wade remains no1 on my list of suppliers!
  • WOW

RW, 8/28/2015 What a great surprise. Though this would be more difficult. First try was a little sloppy, adjusted the knife a little and wow. The linseed oil worked great with some red oak.
  • Number 5

Dana Osterman, 8/3/2015 Love these this the 5th one I have bought. They work great. I soak the thread part in oil before cutting to help prevent blow out.
  • Great Tap & Die

Dana, 7/12/2015 This is the third Tap and die set I have bought. They work great. The die work better after soaking area with oil then there is no tareout. It also works better with a turned piece then a dowel. The tap works great and having both a starter and a bottom çomes in handy. I plane the get one more.
  • Works!

Jim C., 6/17/2015 I soaked oak dowels in linseed oil for three days and had some tear-out. I did the same with maple and they all came out perfect. NOTE: even with the tear-out, the oak screws still function.
  • Awesome Tool

Uwe Gerstner, 4/13/2015 Great tool. I love it. Can make my own threats.
  • My Purchasing Experience at GW

Mario Lagarde, 1/27/2015 It might be difficult to understand to anyone not living outside USA the review/comments I´m about to complete in this review. I actually completed not one, but two orders with GW, even though I´m in a country with severe currency exchange control and were the usage of local Credit Cards for purchasing foreign good is almost forbidden. However and thanks to the sales and customer services department at GW, I was able to successfully complete both order and just waiting to have it in my hands to use them. Thanks you for you patience and cooperation.
  • Wood Screw Maker

Serge Roman, 1/20/2015 Easy to use.
  • Excellent

    L. Titus, 10/9/2014 Outstanding, works exactly the way it is suppose to, what else would you expect from Garrett Wade.
  • Good Quality But Hard To Work

Bård, 7/26/2014 A great tool. The quality is very high. The tool utensil is very hard to get to cut properly. Tried several types of wood but it messed up the the treads on every screw. Maybe some fault in the curling iron.
  • 3/4 Wood Tap and Die

J Brock Vinson, 7/15/2014 Clear and well written directions.
  • Hobbyist

Eddie McConway, 6/25/2014 Simple, and extremely easy to use,the threads were, perfect, am going to buy a 1 tap & die set. "
  • Wood Threader

Donnie, 6/14/2014 Just got my 1 inches wood dowel threader and it sure makes things easier. I will give it a 5.
  • Woodworking Threader

Scott Johnson, 6/4/2014 Fast, excellent service from Garrett Wade. Great communication as to when order was placed, shipped and estimated time of arrival. Great tool, easy to use, served my purpose well. Would order from Garrett Wade again.
  • 1/2 Tap and Die"

Ernie, 5/20/2014 Worked wonderful, right out of the box - to include bottom tapping a 11/32 deep hole in both hard maple and poplar. Excellent! Yes, I did use tung oil as directed on both dowel and taps. Now to complete my "Brighton Bun" traveling candlesticks ..."
  • Clay Work

Russel, 4/5/2014 Question, has anyone used the tap and die set to thread pottery in it's leather hard state. It is my hope that I will be able to create an air tight leak proof cap for bottles. Thank you in advance, Russ
  • Works Fine

Craig, 1/16/2014 The included instructions (and that display photo with a thread break-out) imply that I should expect a bit of a struggle in turning out a good pair of threads -- but it went almost effortlessly on the first try. The good looking male and female threads mated smoothly with minimal tolerance.
    * The dowels I had on hand were going to be too tight in the die tool's lead hole. When I checked that hole and it mic'd at 0.745 inch, which I opened up to a full 3/4 inch.
    * This tap and die set doesn't cut an Acme thread and doesn't claim to, but the thread it does cut will be just fine for my purpose (amateur telescope making).
  • A Different Type of Tree

Matt Stewart, 12/15/2013 This tool made possible my gift to my daughters. With this tool I was able to thread the inside of my eight-sided Purse Tree", allowing me the ability to attach both the crown and foot to the project. The fact that the tree can be disassembled without needing any tools makes this tree an ease to pack and move without risk of damage. This made the gift the hit of the season. I will recommend this to my friends."
  • Just What I Was Looking For

Ted, 11/23/2013 I found plans to make a woodworking bench vise which usually cost over $250, and I needed two of them. This tool will allow me to build just what I need for just a few dollars. I figured I'm saving over $400 on the project, and the tap and die set will allow me to do many other tasks.
  • Satisfied Custumer

Safwat Habashi, 11/12/2013 This was the first time I purchased anything from Garrett Wade. My experience was perfect. The web site was very easy to navigate and my ordering process tool very little time to complete. The product arrived very quickly and in perfect packaging. Billing was also very efficient and proper. In all, I am very satisfied with my first order from a good company.
  • Wooden Bolts & Nuts

Richard Atkins, 9/23/2013 I wanted to make a toy for a Great-Grandson that he could learn from. This tool allowed me to make a board with bolts and nuts on it that he could turn and learn to use a wrench and screwdriver on. (I made the tools also) I found that using tight grain wood is very important and when you do the threads turn out very nice. The tool cut great threads every time. It was easy to use and the Tap needed adjustment but after adjusting, it worked as advertised. It worked so well, I ordered another of a different size.
  • Follow The Directions!

David, 7/27/2013 This set works very well if the directions are followed. Unlubricated dowels will thread very poorly, with many threads breaking. Lube the dowel, and the threads are almost perfect. And that's without sharpening the die blade. The instructions recommend an oil -- mineral, tung, linseed, etc. Your choice depends on the finishing needs. I found that, if wax is to be used, Minwax liquid wax works well, also. The one thing that is needed is careful measurement to determine the length of threaded section made. The position of the blade is clear, and you only need to measure from the blade to the outside edge (straight hole) of the die to be able to draw a line on the die for proper thread length. The taps are straightforward (but also lubed). One tap has a lead-in for easy starting. The other is flat bottomed for blind holes.
  • Works Great

Michael, 7/27/2013 Set works great. No complaints. Larger sizes would be appreciated.
  • Great WOOD DIE set

Louis, 12/28/2012 A very well made tool, I am pleased with it and more so with the fast delivery as promised. Thanks Garrett Wade Louis
  • Hard To Find Size

Don Paolino, 4/14/2011 This item, along with the 1 1/4 inch size product is very hard to find in those sizes. I have looked everywhere but only Garret Wade stocks it as far as I know.
  • Wooden Screws

Jesse Sexton, 12/29/2010 I do beleive that I have never had so much fun with a tool! This is a must have for anyone needing wooden screws or bolts, and all it takes is this tool, a dowel and three or four minutes. I did find out after about the tenth screw that not all purchased dowels are exactly the same, however, the tool will do the work. I will be purchasing a few other sizes now that I see the quality of these.
  • Wood Threader & Tap Die Set

Qskeptic, 7/16/2010 I have the 3/4 and 1 1/4" and just bought the 1/2" one. I have made some good all wooden clamps with them and I'll use the 1/2" to make some smaller ones. The idea being that they can clamp several boards together and the whole lot can be passed through the thicknesser without any worries. They do need a 2" and a 2 1/2" size as well for the adjustable piano stool. There is a big set available for E1100 ho ho."
